The Chemistry Department at Boston College seeks a full-time Operations
Manager. This is a permanent, benefits-eligible position that will
become available on 1 June 2010. The Merkert Chemistry Center,
home of the Chemistry Department, has a large and dynamic chemical
research enterprise; a complex infrastructure; a high occupancy
level; and many safety, security, and compliance requirements.
Domain includes 15 research-active faculty laboratories, seven
undergraduate teaching laboratories, three state-of-the-art research
instrumentation facilities, and loading dock. The role of the Operations
Manager is critical to managing all safety, security, maintenance,
and renovation activities both internally and in relationship with
Facilities Management offices at Boston College. The Operations
Manager will serve on departmental and University committees having
to do with chemical safety, infrastructure, space, and operations.
The department has just implemented a chemical inventory management
system (ChemTracker). This position will supervise four FTEs and
reports to the Director of Administration.
Essential functions include:
- Comprehensive safety management of the Merkert
Chemistry Center in conjunction with University Office of Environmental
and Health Sciences
- Management of the maintenance of building's
55,000 nasf infrastructure in conjunction with University Facilities
Services
- Coordination of the laboratory renovations projects with
University Capital Projects Management
- General administration
of three research instrumentation facilities - NMR, Mass Spectrometry,
and X-ray crystallography - which are staffed by professional scientists
- Supervision
of assistant operations manager
- Productive working relationships
with ~200 faculty, research staff, professional staff, support
staff, and graduate students
Operations Manager Position Requirements:
- M.S. degree in Chemistry or a related science is required
- Knowledge
of laboratory safety regulations and requirements
- Five years +
experience in science laboratory; two to five years of management
experience, including managing professional and support staff;
and one to three years of experience with safety management in
a chemical setting
- Demonstrated ability to conduct training on
both an individual and a group basis
- Mechanical aptitude and knowledge
of basic trades (carpentry, electrical, plumbing, HVAC). Spatial
organizational skill also desirable
