NESACS Meeting – Jan 2024

January 11 @ 3:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Mary Carroll, 2024 ACS President

The 1,026th Meeting of the Northeastern Section of the American Chemical Society

Join us on January 11th for an evening with 2024 American Chemical Society President, Prof. Mary K. Carroll, who will be presenting: Aerogel Materials: A Journey from Research to Commercialization

Abstract: Aerogels are porous materials with unusually high surface areas and low densities that give them simply remarkable properties. Silica aerogel materials, in particular, are of interest for window applications. They are thermal, electrical and acoustic insulators, and can be fabricated in monolithic forms that are translucent or even transparent in the visible region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Invention and development of a rapid supercritical extraction (RSCE) method has allowed an interdisciplinary team of undergraduate students and faculty members to make substantive contributions to the scientific literature, and facilitated productive internal and external collaborations. In this presentation I will introduce the Union College RSCE method, which uses a contained mold in a hydraulic hot press to fabricate aerogel monoliths, provide an overview of research enabled by the RSCE method, and describe the progress of a start-up company, SunThru LLC, founded to bring that technology from the lab to the marketplace.

Mary Carroll, 2024 ACS President

Mary K. Carroll is the Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry at Union College (Schenectady, NY).  She is active in the American Chemical Society (ACS) at the local and national levels, and served as Councilor of the Eastern New York ACS section from 1998 to 2022. In 2022 she was elected ACS President-Elect. Her one-year term began on January 1, 2023, and will be followed by one-year terms as President and Immediate Past Present in 2024 and 2025.

Mary Carroll earned a BS in chemistry from Union College (1986), and a PhD in analytical chemistry from Indiana University, Bloomington (1991). Following a postdoctoral stint at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, she joined the faculty of Union College in 1992. She has been recognized with the Stillman Prize for Excellence in Teaching (1995), the Faculty Meritorious Service Award (2012), and the Stillman Prize for Faculty Excellence in Research (2022).  In 2015, she received the 100 Inspiring Women in STEM Award from INSIGHT into Diversity magazine. She is currently on the Fulbright Specialist Roster (Chemistry Education).

At Union, Prof. Carroll teaches general chemistry, analytical chemistry and chemical instrumentation, as well as courses for non-science majors, mentors undergraduate research students, and engages in college service.

Since 2002, Mary Carroll has co-directed the Union College Aerogel Laboratory, a productive interdisciplinary research group. To date, more than 150 undergraduate STEM majors, several high-school students and faculty colleagues from Union and other institutions have participated in the group’s research in the fabrication, characterization and applications of aerogel materials.

In addition, she serves as Chief Science Officer for SunThru LLC, a company she co-founded for the purpose of developing and commercializing monolithic silica aerogel products for the daylighting market.

Based on her contributions to science and service to the ACS, Mary Carroll was selected for recognition as a member of the class of 2016 ACS Fellows

The meeting will be held at the Northeastern University Alumni Center on the 6th floor of 716 Columbus Avenue, and EXP Bldg., 815 Columbus Ave., Boston, MA 02120
