Title: Synthesis and Study of 3d/4f Metal Complexes for a Variety of Applications Ranging from Materials To Medicine
Abstract: Series of multidentate N/O containing chelates incorporating aromatic and open-chain alkoxide ligands have been explored in synthesizing 3d/4f metal complexes for a variety of applications such as molecular magnets. Herein we will report the structure and properties of Mn, Mn/Ln, and Ln-based metal complexes. Some of them possess intrinsic magnetism coming from an easy axis anisotropy and some show promises as metal-DNA nanostructures. Our group also investigates designing novel magnetic nanomaterials as sorbents for environmental contaminants. Our recent work on the removal of the potentially carcinogenic, fire-retardant chemical from the water will be presented. An example of Course-based Undergraduate Research Experience in a re-designed Advanced Inorganic Chemistry laboratory course along with students’ learning outcomes will be presented as well.
