Frederick “Fred” Greene

Fred Green died recently. He was a member of ACS for over 70 years. Fred was a professor of chemistry at MIT for 42 years. And he was the champion of the physical Richards Medals presented by NESACS for years (photograph above is from the Richards Medal Meeting in March 2024 with 2023 Awardee Joseph Francisco; Fred was on Joe’s dissertation committee at MIT.).

Regarding his chemistry achievements, his Boston Globe and Legacy.com obituary states: “He was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1965. He received an honorary doctorate from Amherst College for his research in free radicals. He was the editor in chief of the Journal of Organic Chemistry of the American Chemical Society from 1962 to 1988.”
