Mort Hoffman – 2002 NESACS Chair
We report with the sad news that Mort Hoffman passed away on September 25, 2024
He was Professor of Physical-Inorganic Chemistry at the Boston University Chemistry department for 44 years until his retirement in 2005. He was also an integral member and volunteer for NESACS. He was very proud to have been a recipient of the Henry A. Hill Award for Outstanding Service to the Northeastern Section (1999) and the James Flack Norris Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Teaching of Chemistry (2005).
He was a very active in the American Chemical Society (ACS) on local, regional, national, and international levels. He served as Chair of the Northeastern Local Section (NESACS) in 2002, Chair of the Division of Chemical Education (CHED), and was a member of the Board of Directors of the Northeast Region, Inc. He represented NESACS on the ACS Council, was a member of the Society Committee on Education (SOCED), served on the Senior Chemists Committee, and was a member of the ACS International Activities Committee. On the international realm, Professor Hoffman was appointed by the National Academies of Science to be the U.S. National Representative to the Committee on Chemistry Education (CCE) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC). In addition, he was an active member of the Board of Directors and former Treasurer of the Malta Conferences Foundation, which organizes the Malta Conferences on Science and Education in the Middle East, the goal of which is to bring together chemists from the nations in the Middle East (and Morocco and Pakistan) for conversation, networking, and collaboration toward peace and a more promising future for that troubled part of the world. During his retirement, he worked with BU International Programs in the development and maintenance of study-abroad science programs in Dresden, Germany, Grenoble, France, and Madrid, Spain.
